“Please stop insulting my mum — she warned me… but it’s me. I’m so ashamed to say I fell in love.” — Actress Regina Daniels speaks on her marriage imbroglio

Nollywood actress Regina Daniels, in an emotional video message released on Instagram today, has publicly appealed to Nigerians to stop directing insults at her mother, actress-producer Rita Daniels, in the wake of her highly-publicised marital difficulties.

In her statement, Regina clarified that her mother had warned her against entering into her current union, but that the decision was ultimately her own. She said:

> “Please, stop insulting my mom. For some reason, I feel like I owe you all this explanation… She’s the best thing that ever happened to me. She is my god on earth. She’s been strong for seven years. My mom held it down. She tried … I’m so ashamed to say I fell in love.”

The actress went on to address widespread speculation that her marriage was motivated by greed:

> “And you all stop saying I got married out of greed. Excuse me. No. We were not broke… what money can a man give to a mother to get her child, who practically provides everything in the house?”

Regina further revealed the internal family turmoil that preceded the public crisis:

* She acknowledged that her mother and her brothers had advised her strongly against the union.

* She admitted that at one point she felt so distressed she considered ending her own life:

  > “I was going to kill myself if I didn’t marry…”

* And that despite the ongoing challenges, she remains committed to her children and their well-being:

  > “I’ll fight for them. I’ll take them. I’ll train them… with or without your support.”

This revelation comes amid the marital crisis between Regina and her husband, senator and businessman Ned Nwoko, which has generated wide public interest.

In calling on the public to show compassion and respect for her mother, Regina emphasised that her family should not be collateral damage in the fallout:

“My family is actually in turmoil…it’s wild, but we’ll definitely come out of it.”

She concluded her message by stating that the scrutiny she receives as a public figure is to be expected—but that personally attacking her mother crosses a line.
