Lagos Police Command Celebrates 70 Years of Nigeria Police Women With Honor Visits, School Outreach

The Lagos State Police Command has joined the rest of the nation in commemorating the Nigeria Police Women @ 70 anniversary with a series of activities aimed at celebrating trailblazing female officers and inspiring the next generation of young girls.

As part of the week-long celebration, a delegation of senior female officers led by ACP Mary Ayim, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Administration), paid special courtesy visits to two iconic retired Deputy Inspectors General of Police — DIG Florence Adebanjo (Rtd.), a pioneer recruit who rose to become the first female Commissioner of Police, Western Port, Lagos; and DIG Cecilia Adebisi Ugowe (Rtd.), the first woman to serve as Force Secretary.
During the visits, the Command’s female officers celebrated the extraordinary contributions of the retired DIGs to policing in Nigeria, describing them as “beacons of courage, discipline, and transformational leadership” in a profession long dominated by men. The honorees, in turn, expressed pride in the progress of women within the Force and encouraged serving officers to continue upholding professionalism and integrity.
The commemorative activities also extended to a community engagement initiative at Onike Girls Junior High School, Sabo, Yaba, where the officers hosted an educational outreach focusing on self-awareness, mental health, career guidance, gender-based violence prevention, and confidence building. Students and teachers received gift items as part of the empowerment exercise.
